Well, after nearly a week of conversations and tweets about how boring this race will be, how dare they put a chicane along the straight, there will be no overtaking and this race will be a procession, the first French Grand Prix at the Paul Ricard track since 1990 (the last French Grand Prix was in 2008) was surprisingly feisty.
Following the confusion and carnage on lap one after the first corner which resulted in the safety car being deployed (and yes, I called safety car on lap one again) the race calmed down, but there was a glut of overtaking. Funnily enough many of the overtakes happened around the chicane that was the subject of objection.
There was also the threat, and then disappointment of lack of rain, retirements due to engine failure and of course many, many, many funny tweets.
This week is possibly the toughest week I’ve ever had to judge. I’m not going to lie to you, I struggled to whittle the entries down to just 10, and then wished I could award each one in the top ten first place.
But I couldn’t, I was strong and managed to order them by how much they made me giggle.
Before I announce the top ten, this week I do have an honorary mention to @SpannersReady for this tweet about Sirotkin’s penalty for going too slowly.
But here are this week’s Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards:
In 10th place is @dibhayles for this tweet after Kimi actually overtook someone, for the first time in a very long time
9th place goes to @Senna58DW for summing up Williams’ season so succinctly as they finished plum last. Well Sirotkin did, Stroll retired on lap 48 with a puncture which deployed the virtual safety car.
8th place goes to @LastLapPodcast for describing the two home drivers who crashed out on the first lap…
In 7th place is @f1trackchat describing the preparation drivers have to go through when they qualify around a certain Romain Grosjean (who seems to be vying for Pastor Maldonado’s title)
In 6th place is @Krustylicious for describing Vettel during the fist couple of corners. Unfortunately, like most us, Vettel does need room to manoeuvre around vehicles. If you don’t leave room you will make contact…
5th place goes to @TarasDemerson wondering what Vettel was doing when he bumped into Bottas on lap one. Playing ping pong??
In 4th place is @timwagner66 with a sneaky peek into the cockpit of some of the drivers on lap one…
3rd place goes to @f1_fan_boy with a translation of Alonso’s radio message before he retired on lap 50
2nd place goes to @Tiametmarduk for the joker lap option. After all with 167ish lap configurations is it any wonder that on lap one drivers were scattered everywhere??
This week’s winner, in 1st place is @alexstanger1993 following Sirotkin’s 5-second penalty for driving too slowly under the safety car.
If you enjoyed these, why not join in next week?
Yes, next week.
Three F1 races in a row, that makes for a very happy Pitlane Girl.
Joining in is easy. Simply follow me on Twitter (@Pitlane_Girl) and during the race tweet funny comments (tagging me, so I don’t miss them). That’s it. I then whittle them down to the Top 10.
So, see you in Austria, where the hills will be alive with the sound of … F1 cars.
