Wow! Just wow!
For a track that everyone thought would produce yet another car parade, we were certainly mistaken.
What with overtakes, strategy errors, engine failures and the odd Sound of Music reference, it was 71 laps of excitement.
Of course, there’s no pleasing all of the people all of the time, and someone on Twitter told me they’d seen a tweet from a lady who thought the race was so boring she was going out.
Really? I for one thoroughly enjoyed it.
And with all the excitement on track, that made for a plethora of funny tweets to filter through my timeline.
And boy, what a bunch they were today. I could have done a top 20 and even then that would be too few. So, as you can guess my task of judging was super tricky.
But, with the help of small boy, judge I did.
Before we get to the top 10, I couldn’t let this week go by without including at least one Sound of Music tweet could I. So an honorary mention this week to everyone’s favourite F1 Team Twitter account, @RenaultSportF1 for this tweet after the start of the race when Bottas lost the lead only to crawl back to 2nd by the end of the lap:
And here, ladies and gentlemen are this week’s Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards:
In 10th place is @pgillett2017 for this tweet after Bottas retired due to an hydraulics problem
9th place goes to @SimonGBrooks following David Croft’s prediction that the Grand Prix could prove to be quite fruity. How right he was…
8th place goes to @stargateoracle following Bottas’s drop from P1 to P4 on the 1st corner of lap 1.
In 7th place is @MichaelGierula depicting Kimi going into the first corner and trying to squeeze between the two Merecedes
In 6th place is @LastLapPodcast for an insight into Kimi’s defence of his position when Lewis came out between Raikonnen and Vettel after his pit stop
In 5th place is @iAnderton for this tweet after the Mercedes strategists called it wrong after the deployment of the virtual safety car
4th place goes to @dibhayles for this tweet after Mercedes’ Chief Strategist, James Vowles, admitted responsibility for not pitting Lewis under the virtual safety car. And, to be honest, fair play to Mercedes to broadcasting his apology over team radio to everyone who was watching and listening. It’s not often you get people saying they are sorry!
3rd place goes to @LBraking showing footage of Daniel Ricciardo driving round before his 2nd, unscheduled, pit stop, due to extremely blistered tyres
In 2nd place is @Mattzel89 for this tweet showing the close racing action between Kimi and the two Mercedes on the first lap
This week’s winner, in 1st place is @F1trackchat for this tweet showing the real reason Nico Hulkenberg’s car caught fire, prompting his retirement
So there you have it. This week’s Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards for the Austrian Grand Prix 2018.
